New York (CNN) – For the first time in nearly two decades, Walmart has updated its iconic logo, introducing a new design that subtly nods to its rich history.

On Monday, the 61-year-old retail giant revealed its refreshed brand identity, featuring a redesigned logo inspired by founder Sam Walton’s classic trucker hat. The updated logo uses a chunkier font, drawing influence from a typeface Walmart employed during the 1980s and early 2000s.

While Walmart has retained its signature yellow “spark,” a darker shade of blue has been introduced to “keep the brand fresh,” according to the company. The new design will debut on Walmart’s website and app this month, with a gradual rollout to its 10,500 stores, many of which are undergoing makeovers.

“This update, rooted in the legacy of our founder, Sam Walton, demonstrates our evolving capabilities and longstanding commitment to serve our customers of today and tomorrow,” said William White, senior vice president and chief marketing officer of Walmart US.
Looking Back to Move Forward

The last significant logo update for Walmart occurred in 2008, when the company combined the words “Wal” and “Mart” into one and removed the star symbol. That redesign coincided with a challenging period for the retailer, marked by sluggish sales and heightened competition from rivals like Target.

In contrast, Walmart’s latest logo refresh comes during a period of robust growth. In its most recent earnings report, the company revealed a 5% increase in same-store sales and an 8% rise in profit for its US locations.

Walmart’s ability to attract higher-income shoppers has been bolstered by strategic investments in its grocery business and its use of massive scale to lower prices amid inflation. The company has also diversified its offerings, enhancing its selection of clothing, electronics, home goods, and more.

Additionally, Walmart has made significant strides in its e-commerce operations to compete with Amazon, reporting a 22% increase in online sales in the US last quarter.
