Ilia Topuria scores third-round KO of Max Holloway at UFC 308
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates — UFC featherweight champion Ilia Topuria delivered on his promise to knock out Max Holloway on Saturday, becoming the first fighter ever to do so. Topuria (16-0) dropped Holloway (26-8) with a powerful left hook, following up with hammerfists to finish the fight at 1:34 of the third round. This featherweight title bout, headlining UFC 308 at Etihad Arena, marked Topuria's first title defense since claiming the belt in February with a knockout win over Alexander Volkanovski.
“Beating a legend like Max Holloway feels unreal,” Topuria said. “He’s inspired my career, and to now represent a new generation like he once did is an honor.” Topuria, the UFC’s youngest champion at 27, displayed remarkable composure, pushing through Holloway’s strikes to find his timing and range, ultimately landing the decisive right hand that set up the left-hook finish.
Although Holloway showed moments of control, Topuria’s relentless pressure and power were undeniable. Reflecting on the fight, Topuria remarked, “I caught him with many punches, but I knew that right hand hurt him when he started backing up. You don’t see that often with Max Holloway.”
Topuria now has several paths forward, with a potential rematch against Volkanovski being the most likely. Volkanovski, who was present at UFC 308, expressed interest in facing Topuria again, and UFC president Dana White seemed supportive of the matchup. The UFC is also considering a major event in Spain, Topuria’s home base, in 2025, as well as a February card in Sydney, Australia, where Volkanovski resides.
Another contender for Topuria is Brazilian Mexican fighter Diego Lopes, who recently defeated former title challenger Brian Ortega and served as the backup for UFC 308. However, Lopes is likely next in line after Volkanovski.
Holloway, now 0-4 in his last four title fights, three of which were against Volkanovski, vowed to return. "He landed the shot, and it hurt more than I realized," Holloway admitted. "No excuses, he was the better man tonight."
