'Encouraged' Dodgers say Ohtani has partially dislocated shoulder

LOS ANGELES — Shohei Ohtani sustained a partial dislocation, or subluxation, of his left shoulder during a steal attempt Saturday night, raising concerns about his availability for the remainder of the World Series. Despite the injury, the Los Angeles Dodgers, now leading the series 2-0 following their 4-2 victory over the New York Yankees at Dodger Stadium, remained optimistic about his return, according to manager Dave Roberts.

After initial assessments, Roberts noted that Ohtani’s strength and range of motion tests were positive. Ohtani is set to undergo an MRI in Los Angeles before joining the team in New York, where the Dodgers are scheduled to play Games 3, 4, and possibly 5 at Yankee Stadium on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

When asked about the impact of Ohtani’s potential absence, Roberts expressed confidence in his lineup, stating, “I’m expecting him to be there. I’m expecting him to be in the lineup.” Ohtani, who hasn’t missed a game due to injury this season, was visibly in pain after being tagged out at second base, staying on the ground while clutching his left arm. Dodgers assistant athletic trainer Yosuke Nakajima supported Ohtani as they walked off the field together.

Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernandez described the tense atmosphere in the stadium: “The whole stadium went silent. You know how big Shohei is for this team. Hopefully, he’s OK, and the day off tomorrow will help him get back on the field on Monday.”
