SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The Dallas Cowboys find themselves in a challenging situation after starting the season with high hopes, now standing at 3-4 following a 30-24 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

“We're disappointed,” said head coach Mike McCarthy. “Our guys prepared well this week, and I saw areas of improvement. But there’s still a lot of work to do.”

The last time the Cowboys held a 3-4 record with a healthy Dak Prescott was in 2018. During the 2020 season, they started at 2-5, which later spiraled to 2-7 after Prescott suffered a severe ankle injury. The 2018 squad rebounded after acquiring wide receiver Amari Cooper midseason, ultimately finishing at 10-6, winning the NFC East, and securing a playoff victory. Of the players active during Sunday’s game, only five—Prescott, running back Ezekiel Elliott, right guard Zack Martin, cornerback Jourdan Lewis, and special-teamer C.J. Goodwin—remain from that roster.

Next week, the Cowboys will face the Atlanta Falcons, who lead the NFC South.

“We know what it takes in this league,” Prescott stated. “Once you get hot and start rolling, that’s what you want. It’s frustrating, but nobody is giving up. No one is shaken by our current situation. We need to focus, prepare for the road ahead, and do everything possible to secure a win. We have to even things out and take it one game at a time.”

The Cowboys' upcoming schedule is tough, with their next four opponents—the Falcons, Philadelphia Eagles, Houston Texans, and Washington Commanders—boasting a combined record of 22-7 after all winning on Sunday.

“We have to take it one Sunday at a time,” Lewis emphasized. “We can’t look too far ahead. Right now, we need to focus on the next game and our next opportunity.”

However, frustration is mounting. The Cowboys have now lost four consecutive games to the 49ers, including two playoff matches and three straight at Levi's Stadium.

“It’s really disappointing,” wide receiver CeeDee Lamb expressed. “Coming here three times in the last three years and not getting the win is sickening.”

Despite trailing 27-10 after a dismal third quarter, where they were outscored 21-0 and outgained 167 yards to 16, the Cowboys nearly staged a comeback. However, Prescott’s drive with 3:05 left fell short after he threw four straight incompletions.

Prescott had a challenging game, becoming the first Cowboys quarterback since Troy Aikman in 1992 to throw two interceptions in three consecutive games, according to ESPN Research. He completed 25 of 38 passes for 243 yards and was sacked twice.

“I’m personally frustrated with my performance. I imagine the rest of the team feels the same way,” Prescott admitted. “It’s tough not getting the win, especially now with two losses in a row and sitting at 3-4. But I can assure you that no one is shaken or ready to give up. Frustration is high, but it’s a long season ahead. There are still many division games to play.”

“Frustrated,” he concluded. “That’s the best way I can describe it.”
