Luka Dončić drops 14 points in Lakers debut alongside LeBron James in blowout win over Jazz
Just over a week after the blockbuster trade that shook the NBA, Luka Dončić made his highly anticipated Los Angeles Lakers debut on Monday night against the Utah Jazz.
Dončić put up 14 points in the Lakers' commanding 132-113 victory at Crypto.com Arena. He shot 5-of-14 from the field and 1-of-7 from three, adding five rebounds and four assists in 24 minutes of play. Despite his limited time on the court due to a recent calf injury, Dončić showed flashes of his elite talent.
"I was just happy to be on the court again," Dončić said in a postgame interview with ESPN.
Entering the starting lineup alongside LeBron James, Dončić received a thunderous ovation from Lakers fans, who were also given custom Dončić Lakers shirts upon arrival.
The Trade That Shook the NBA
Dončić was traded to the Lakers on Feb. 1 in exchange for Anthony Davis, a move that remains a hot topic across the league. Dallas Mavericks fans have expressed their outrage, and tensions escalated further after reports surfaced that Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison received death threats.
Making matters worse for Dallas, Davis suffered an adductor strain in his debut with the team on Saturday against the Houston Rockets. The non-contact injury is expected to sideline him for several weeks. Davis had already been dealing with an abdominal strain from his time with the Lakers.
Lakers' Performance & Key Players
The Lakers (32-19) currently hold fifth place in the Western Conference, and Dončić's addition brings another superstar presence. LeBron James, who missed Saturday’s game due to ankle soreness, returned to action, delivering 24 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds.
Other standout performances included:
Austin Reaves: 22 points, nine rebounds
Rui Hachimura: 21 points, six rebounds
For Utah (12-40), Lauri Markkanen led with 17 points, but struggled from deep, shooting 1-of-8 from three. John Collins contributed 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Jordan Clarkson added 16 points.
What’s Next?
While Dončić and James are still developing their on-court chemistry, Monday’s victory marked the beginning of a new era for the Lakers. The team is set to return to action on Wednesday night, with rookie Dalton Knecht expected to be available after a rescinded trade sent him back to Los Angeles.
With Dončić officially in purple and gold, all eyes are on Southern California to see how this superstar duo reshapes the NBA landscape.
