Google officially changes the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America on Maps

Google Maps has officially updated the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America following an executive order from President Donald Trump. This change aligns with Google’s policy of using official government names for geographical locations.

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Google confirmed the update, citing its long-standing practice of adapting to official government sources. The renaming was approved by the federal Board on Geographic Names and implemented by the United States Geological Survey's Geographic Names Information System.

Additionally, Mount Denali in Alaska will be renamed Mount McKinley, per Trump's executive order on January 20. Google has stated this update will be reflected swiftly once the names system is updated.
How This Affects Users Globally

For users outside the United States, Google Maps will display both the Gulf of America and the name recognized in their region. This approach mirrors the platform’s handling of other disputed geographical names, such as the Sea of Japan (East Sea).

This update is part of Google’s broader policy to reflect official naming conventions, ensuring consistency in its Maps application.
