Pelicans' Dejounte Murray Suffers Season-Ending Achilles Injury in Loss to Celtics
NEW ORLEANS – New Orleans Pelicans guard Dejounte Murray suffered a season-ending torn Achilles tendon during Friday night’s 118-116 loss to the Boston Celtics, sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The injury occurred as Murray drove into the lane, took a shot, and went after his own rebound. He suddenly fell to the court, clutching his right foot. After getting up, he hobbled toward the Pelicans' bench and was quickly ruled out with what the team initially described as a lower right leg injury.
Coach and Team Reactions
"Extremely difficult, when you see a guy that means so much to our team and puts the work in go down like that," said Pelicans head coach Willie Green after the game.
The injury-plagued Pelicans were already without Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram, and Herb Jones. With the loss, they fell to a 12-27 record. Notably, Ingram, Williamson, and Murray had yet to share the court together this season.
"Those are the challenges that we've been going through pretty much all season," Green added.
Murray’s Impact This Season
Murray had been a key contributor for the Pelicans, averaging 17.9 points per game while leading the team in assists (7.6) and steals (2.1). He was in the midst of a strong stretch, recording at least 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists in four consecutive games—tying the longest such streak of his career and the longest by a Pelicans player since Ingram in 2022.
With Murray sidelined for the rest of the season, the Pelicans will face even greater challenges as they navigate an already injury-plagued campaign.
