Atlanta hip-hop icon DJ Unk dies at 42: TMZ
Anthony Leonard Platt, also known as DJ Unk, passed away on January 24, 2025. The Atlanta rapper, who was a key figure in the rise of snap music, achieved national fame in the mid-2000s with his hit single "Walk It Out," which cracked the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. His debut album Beat'n Down Yo Block! (2006) featured iconic tracks like "Walk It Out" and "2 Step," which became essential anthems in Southern hip-hop and club culture. His music, marked by infectious beats and energetic delivery, made him a defining voice of the genre.
Platt's second album, 2econd Season (2008), further demonstrated his talent as a DJ, rapper, and producer. Throughout his career, he collaborated with influential artists and producers, such as DJ Montay and V.I.C., and left a lasting legacy on the Atlanta music scene.
His passing was confirmed by his wife, who shared the news on social media, requesting privacy for her family. "Please respect me and my family. I just lost my husband, and my kids just lost their father. Our life will never be the same. I LOVE YOU ANTHONY FOREVER," she posted. DJ Montay, a frequent collaborator, paid tribute to him on Facebook, saying, "RIP Unk, glad to say we was able to make history together."
DJ Unk's music continues to resonate with fans, and his contributions to the Southern hip-hop movement will not be forgotten.
