Trump picks Fox News host and Army veteran Pete Hegseth to serve as secretary of defense

President-elect Donald Trump has selected Pete Hegseth, a Fox News host and Army veteran, as his choice for Secretary of Defense. The decision came as a surprise, as Hegseth was not previously considered a top candidate by those familiar with the discussions. Sources close to the situation revealed that Trump’s longstanding relationship with Hegseth, coupled with his military service and his book detailing his experience, played a major role in the selection. Trump has often praised Hegseth for being "smart" and admires his background as a military veteran.

While Hegseth was not initially on the shortlist for defense secretary, Trump struggled to settle on a candidate and ultimately decided to offer Hegseth the position after a series of interviews. Trump reportedly also liked Hegseth’s appearance and demeanor, seeing him as someone with the "look" for the role.

The pick marks a departure from Trump's first term, where he chose military leaders, such as General James Mattis and Army Secretary Mark Esper, to head the Pentagon. However, after Mattis resigned and Esper was fired, Trump grew critical of both. Hegseth’s nomination is expected to trigger a contentious confirmation process, as Senate Republicans, who now hold the majority, will scrutinize the selection.

Trump praised Hegseth's service record and his work as a Fox News personality, calling him "tough, smart, and a true believer in America First." He emphasized that Hegseth’s leadership would send a strong message to America’s enemies, promising to make the military "great again" and ensuring America would "never back down."
