Giants use strong performance from Daniel Jones and late TD on blocked kick to beat Seahawks 29-20
Isaiah Simmons' addition to the New York Giants' field goal block unit proved to be the game-changer in their 29-20 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. With 55 seconds left, Simmons blocked a potential game-tying field goal, and Bryce Ford-Wheaton returned the loose ball 60 yards for a touchdown, securing the win.
Seattle was on the verge of tying the game when Simmons perfectly timed his leap through a gap created by Dexter Lawrence II and blocked the kick. Ford-Wheaton scooped up the ball and raced to the end zone, clinching the Giants' second win of the season.
Simmons, who had never played on the field goal block team before, predicted earlier that he would block a kick. His athleticism paid off as the Giants' special teams executed a play designed by coordinator Michael Ghobrial earlier in the week.
“It happened exactly how we installed it,” Ford-Wheaton said. “(Simmons) is a freak athlete, and we trusted him.”
Before that dramatic finish, the Giants (2-3) had crafted a near-perfect game plan despite missing key offensive players, rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers and running back Devin Singletary. Quarterback Daniel Jones led the charge, throwing for 230 yards and two touchdowns, including a 30-yard strike to Darius Slayton early in the third quarter that gave New York a 17-10 lead.
Rookie Tyrone Tracy filled in for Singletary, rushing for 129 yards, while Slayton recorded eight catches for 122 yards. Seattle's late-game rally, including a 95-yard touchdown drive capped by a Geno Smith TD pass to Jaxon Smith-Njigba, ultimately fell short after Simmons' game-saving block.
Giants head coach Brian Daboll praised the execution, saying, “We talked about who would be a good candidate to do the jump, and Isaiah came to mind, and he executed it perfectly.”
