Paris 2024 Paralympic Games | Para powerlifting: One world record, two paralympic records but no French medal on the first day of competition

Alex Adelaïde and Axel Bourlon, the two French competitors in today's Para powerlifting events, faced challenges, with Adelaïde securing a sixth-place finish and Bourlon unable to rank after three unsuccessful attempts. Meanwhile, the women's categories saw two Paralympic records and one world record shattered. Here's a recap of the day's action.

Expectations were high for Axel Bourlon, who had claimed a silver medal at the Tokyo 2021 Paralympics. Welcomed with great enthusiasm at the Arena Porte de La Chapelle, the crowd, waving blue, white, and red flags, erupted in cheers. However, Bourlon remained calm and focused, sitting quietly before his first lift.

Disappointment for Axel Bourlon

Unfortunately, Bourlon’s first attempt at lifting 163 kilograms was disqualified by two out of three judges, and a video review confirmed the call. With Kazakhstan's David Degtyarev successfully lifting 184 kilograms, Bourlon’s position dropped. Vietnam’s An Nguyen also withdrew after failing his first attempt at 168 kilograms.

Determined to bounce back, Bourlon increased the weight for his second lift. "I felt confident with the first lift, despite the decision, so I decided to go for more," he told reporters. He attempted 169 kilograms, which could have secured him fifth place. However, an error with his right arm led to another invalidation by all three judges, confirmed once more by video review. His third and final attempt at the same weight also ended in failure, leaving him unranked.

Reflecting on his performance, Bourlon expressed his disappointment: "I didn’t come here for this. I was aiming for a medal, ideally gold, and now I’m leaving empty-handed."

Kazakhstan’s David Degtyarev ultimately took gold with a lift of 188 kilograms, while Cuba’s Pablo Ramirez Barrientos (185 kg) and China’s Jinglang Yang (179 kg) secured silver and bronze, respectively.
