Nicole Kidman Misses Best Actress Win in Venice Due to Her Mother’s Death: ‘Family Is Heartbroken’
Nicole Kidman has announced the passing of her mother, Janelle Ann Kidman. On Saturday, Sept. 7, Kidman, 57, shared the heartbreaking news in a statement read by Babygirl director Halina Reijn during the Venice Film Festival. Kidman had left the festival early after learning of her mother’s death.
In the statement, read aloud by Reijn, Kidman wrote, "I had just flown in to Venice, only to find out shortly after that my beautiful, brave mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, has just passed." She expressed her shock, stating, "I'm in shock and I have to go to my family, but this award is for her. She shaped me, she guided me and she made me."
Kidman dedicated the award to her mother, noting how profoundly Janelle influenced her life and career. "I am beyond grateful that I get to say her name to all of you through Halina," the statement continued. "The collision of life and art is heartbreaking, and my heart is broken."
After reading Kidman’s words to the audience, Reijn concluded with, “We love you all, Nicole.”
A representative for Kidman confirmed Janelle’s death to PEOPLE, sharing that the family is "heartbroken and asks for privacy at this time."
Nicole Kidman had previously spoken about the strong bond she shared with her mother. In an interview with PEOPLE in November 2023, she explained how Janelle had influenced her career and personal style, saying, "She is so involved in what I wear." Kidman also told the Sydney Morning Herald in 2020 how her mother played a pivotal role in shaping her ambition. "She’s given me the fire to pursue the career I have because I’ve always wanted to please her," Kidman said. "But she also carved her own path and wanted her daughters to have the same opportunity to carve their own paths."
Reflecting on her mother’s influence, Kidman added, "Mum didn’t necessarily get the career that she wanted, but she was determined that her daughters would have opportunities that were equal. That’s given me my life. And she gave me my life, she and my dad."
