It's impossible to think of James Earl Jones without recalling his iconic voice. That deep, resonant bass, full of both authority and intensity, became his signature. It brought an undeniable presence to his many roles, most memorably as Darth Vader in *Star Wars*, Mufasa in *The Lion King*, and as the voice of CNN.

Jones’ extraordinary voice is just one of the countless things the world will mourn following the beloved actor's passing on Monday at the age of 93, as confirmed by his agent. He was surrounded by family, though no cause of death was given.

“From the gentle wisdom of Mufasa to the menacing threat of Darth Vader, James Earl Jones gave voice to some of cinema’s most iconic characters,” said Bob Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Company, in a statement. “With nearly 200 film and television credits, his commanding presence and genuine spirit have left a lasting impact on generations.”

Jones’ remarkable career spanned over 60 years, from small-town theaters in northern Michigan to the heights of Hollywood.

Voicing Darth Vader

In the mid-1970s, *Star Wars* creator George Lucas cast British actor David Prowse as the man behind Darth Vader’s imposing figure but opted for a different voice.

“George wanted a—pardon the expression—a darker voice,” Jones once explained to the American Film Institute. “I got lucky.”

At the time, no one expected *Star Wars* to become a blockbuster, much less a cultural phenomenon. Jones recorded his lines in just a few hours, earning $7,000, which he considered decent pay. He wasn’t even credited for the role in the original film.

Jones and Lucas occasionally disagreed on how to portray Vader’s voice. “I wanted to make him more interesting, more subtle, more psychological,” Jones recalled. “But George insisted, ‘No, no... you’ve got to keep it narrow, because he’s not human.’”

Darth Vader’s climactic showdown with Luke Skywalker in *The Empire Strikes Back* became a defining moment in the series, highlighted by Jones’ chilling delivery of the now-legendary line: "No, I am your father!"

Mark Hamill, who played Luke, paid tribute to Jones in a heartfelt Instagram post: “One of the world’s greatest actors whose contributions to *Star Wars* were immense. He’ll be deeply missed. #RIPDad.”

Bringing Mufasa to Life

Nearly two decades later, Jones lent his voice to another unforgettable character: Mufasa in Disney's 1994 animated classic *The Lion King*. Initially, he struggled to find the right tone for the wise and majestic lion king.

“My first mistake was trying to make him too regal,” Jones admitted. “But what they really wanted was something closer to my real self. They asked, ‘What are you like as a father?’ I told them, ‘Honestly, I’m kind of a goofy dad.’”

This more down-to-earth approach led to the creation of Mufasa as both a gentle and authoritative father figure, with animators even using Jones' facial expressions to influence the character’s design.
