DWTS Premiere Full Recap: Tori Spelling Tries to 'Find Myself Again,' 1 Star Set 'the Standard for Season 33'
Welcome back to the ballroom!
*Dancing with the Stars* made a grand return on Tuesday, Sept. 17, with its season 33 premiere on ABC. The new batch of celebrities, including *Beverly Hills, 90210* actress Tori Spelling, Olympic bronze medalist Stephen Nedoroscik, and *Bachelor Nation* stars Joey Graziadei and Jenn Tran, showcased what they've been working on in the studio.
Judges Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Tonioli, and Derek Hough are back, along with hosts Julianne Hough and Alfonso Ribeiro. However, it was the controversial casting of convicted con artist Anna Delvey that drew major attention. Delvey, whose real name is Anna Sorokin, will compete while under house arrest, granted special permission by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Whoopi Goldberg raised concerns about this on *The View*, questioning a potential "two-tiered system" within ICE. Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin, who criticized Delvey for still owing people money, later issued a public apology.
Julianne Hough acknowledged the controversy but expressed excitement over Delvey's participation, calling it "fascinating." Delvey made her debut with a Cha Cha to Sabrina Carpenter's "Espresso," stating, "I've reinvented myself many times, and this time, I'm going to be a ballroom dancer."
Other performances of the night included Joey Graziadei's strong Cha Cha to Tyler Hubbard's “Dancing in the Country,” which placed him at the top of the leaderboard. Former NBA star Dwight Howard impressed with a Salsa to "This Is How We Do It," and actress Chandler Kinney emerged as an early frontrunner with a fiery Tango to Chappell Roan's "HOT TO GO!"
Despite a few stars ending the night at the bottom of the leaderboard, host Alfonso Ribeiro announced that no one would be eliminated this week, giving all 13 pairs another chance to "find their footing." However, next week's Hollywood Night will feature a double elimination.
Delvey’s dance partner, Ezra Sosa, acknowledged the immense pressure she faced. "There’s a lot of publicity surrounding Anna, so I hope to guide her to that second chance." Delvey hoped the show would help reshape public perception: "I hope I can turn people's opinions around."
Olympian Stephen Nedoroscik, DWTS' first male gymnast, also hoped to leave his mark with a Jive to Queen's "Don’t Stop Me Now." Known as the "Pommel Horse Guy," Nedoroscik shared that his love for computers and Rubik's Cubes fuels his analytical approach to dance. Inaba praised him for being "light on his feet" but encouraged him to "point those toes."
The competition is heating up, and fans will need to tune in next week for more dazzling performances and the first double elimination of the season!"
