Right-wing extremists, white nationalists, and neo-Nazis are enthusiastically celebrating a controversial gesture made by Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, at a rally following Donald Trump’s inauguration.

During the event, Musk thanked Trump supporters with a gesture that some have compared to a Roman salute. He placed his palm to his chest before extending his right arm outward, slightly elevated, with his palm facing down. Musk repeated the gesture later in the rally, fueling further speculation.

Musk’s influence in the new administration is undeniable. After spending hundreds of millions to support Trump’s election campaign, he has played a significant role in shaping the incoming government. Trump appointed Musk to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an initiative aimed at drastically cutting federal spending. Additionally, Trump aligned his inauguration speech with Musk’s vision of colonizing Mars, describing it as part of America’s “manifest destiny.”

The gesture sparked widespread celebration among extremist groups. While Musk’s intentions remain unclear—he may have awkwardly been trying to show appreciation to the crowd with a gesture he described as, “My heart goes out to you”—far-right groups seized the moment. Online communities linked to white nationalism embraced the gesture, interpreting it as a signal of support.

Christopher Pohlhaus, leader of the neo-Nazi group Blood Tribe, shared the video of Musk’s gesture on Telegram, pairing it with a lightning-bolt emoji resembling Nazi SS imagery. Neo-Nazi figure Christopher Hood also reposted the clip with celebratory emojis, while Andrew Torba, founder of the far-right social platform Gab, shared the video, calling it “incredible.” Other prominent far-right figures, including Australian neo-Nazi Thomas Sewell and ethno-nationalist Keith Woods, also applauded the moment online.

Groups such as White Lives Matter expressed gratitude on Telegram, using Musk’s gesture to amplify their white nationalist rhetoric. They shared photos of banners reading, “Elon Musk Stop White Genocide,” alongside messages of appreciation for what they see as Musk’s alignment with their ideology.

Musk’s past actions have fueled accusations of far-right sympathies. As the owner of X (formerly Twitter), he reinstated accounts of banned white nationalists under the guise of free speech. He has also interacted with far-right movements in Europe, including Germany’s extremist AfD party, and faced backlash for engaging with antisemitic conspiracy theories online. Despite an apology tour in Israel following one such controversy, Musk continues to use alt-right symbols and memes, such as Pepe the Frog, further blurring the lines between his personal views and far-right ideology.

While Musk’s gesture may have been unintentional, its reception among extremists highlights his growing association with far-right movements. This incident, paired with his prominent role in Trump’s administration, has amplified concerns about his influence and the signals his actions send to extremist communities.
