Leslie Charleson Dies: ‘General Hospital’ Actress Was 79

Leslie Charleson, the iconic actress best known for portraying Dr. Monica Quartermaine on General Hospital, has passed away. The news was confirmed by General Hospital Executive Producer Frank Valentini on X (formerly Twitter).

"It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of my dear friend and colleague, @lesliecharleson," Valentini shared. "Her enduring legacy spanned nearly 50 years on General Hospital alone. Just as Monica was the heart of the Quartermaine family, Leslie was a beloved matriarch of the entire cast and crew. I will miss our daily chats, her quick wit, and her incredible presence on set. On behalf of everyone at #GeneralHospital, my heartfelt sympathy goes out to her loved ones during this difficult time."

Charleson was a four-time Daytime Emmy nominee who brought the beloved Dr. Monica Quartermaine to life from 1977 until 2023. Her departure from the show was prompted by health issues, with her final appearance airing in December 2023.

Born in Missouri, Charleson began her television career with roles on the soaps A Flame in the Wind and As the World Turns, which launched her into a series of TV appearances in popular shows such as The Wild, Wild West, Mannix, Adam-12, Medical Center, Happy Days, and Cannon.

In 1977, she joined General Hospital, replacing Patsy Rahn as Monica Quartermaine. Reflecting on her early days on the show, Charleson shared with Soap Opera Digest in 2022: “I started the show the day Elvis Presley died. Being such a huge fan, I was already upset driving to the studio, only to be told there was a strike, so I had to bring my own wardrobe and makeup. To make matters worse, I realized the cast wasn’t exactly welcoming since the previous Monica had been abruptly fired.”

Monica’s tumultuous marriage to Alan Quartermaine (played by the late Stuart Damon) became a fan favorite, despite numerous affairs, epic fights, and separations. The couple remarried in 1991 and stayed together until Alan’s on-screen death in 2007.

In addition to her acting, Charleson was a passionate advocate for breast cancer awareness, using her platform to bring attention to the issue, especially after her character was diagnosed with the disease in the 1990s.

Charleson was married to G. William Demms from 1988 to 1991. Her contributions to television and her advocacy work leave behind a lasting legacy cherished by her colleagues and fans alike.
