LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jeff Baena, the writer-director known for his darkly comedic independent films such as The Little Hours and husband of frequent collaborator Aubrey Plaza, has passed away at the age of 47.
Baena was discovered deceased on Friday morning at a residence in Los Angeles, as confirmed by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office. The circumstances surrounding his death remain uncertain, and an investigation is ongoing. A full report will be released once the case is concluded.
Baena co-wrote David O. Russell’s 2004 film I Heart Huckabees and directed five films of his own, with four premiering at the Sundance Film Festival.
His career began with his 2014 directorial debut, the zombie comedy Life After Beth, starring Aubrey Plaza, whom he had been dating for three years at the time. He followed it with Joshy in 2016, a film starring Thomas Middleditch as a man reuniting with friends months after his fiancée’s tragic suicide.
Born to an attorney and a teacher, Baena was raised in Miami before attending New York University’s film school. In a 2017 interview with podcaster Marc Maron, he revealed that his passion for cinema was ignited as a child after watching Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange and Federico Fellini’s 8 1/2.
