Anita Bryant Dry—former Miss Oklahoma, Grammy-nominated singer, Christian author, and recipient of numerous awards for her service and leadership—passed away peacefully at her home in Edmond, Oklahoma, on Monday, December 16, 2024, surrounded by her loving family and friends. She was 84 years old.
Born on March 25, 1940, in Barnsdall, Oklahoma, to Lenora (Berry) Bryant and Warren Bryant, Anita’s early life was marked by a deep connection to family and faith. Her love for music emerged early, paving the way for a remarkable career. By age 12, she had her own TV show, and at 18, she was crowned Miss Oklahoma. Her musical talents brought her national fame with chart-topping hits like “Till There Was You,” “Paper Roses,” “In My Little Corner of the World,” and “Wonderland by Night.” She also appeared on iconic programs such as Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts and American Bandstand.
For seven consecutive years, Anita toured with Bob Hope to perform for U.S. troops overseas. Dubbed the troupe's "den mother" for her nurturing spirit, she became a favorite among servicemen and women. Anita also sang at the White House for President Lyndon B. Johnson and at his memorial service, and she famously performed at both the Republican and Democratic national conventions in 1968. Her powerful rendition of “Battle Hymn of the Republic” became a signature performance.
Anita’s career extended into popular culture, where she sang at the 1971 Super Bowl and cohosted the nationally televised Orange Bowl Parade for nine years. She became a familiar face as the spokesperson for Florida orange juice and Coca-Cola, roles she held for nearly a decade each.
Later in life, Anita devoted herself to faith-based work, founding Anita Bryant Ministries International to inspire others to live with purpose and faith. Her ministry was an extension of her commitment to family, where she found immense joy as a mother to her four children—Bobby, Gloria, Billy, and Barbara—and a grandmother to her seven grandchildren. Anita delighted in writing Bible songs and teaching them to her grandchildren, leaving a legacy of music and devotion.
Preceded in death by her husband, Charlie; her parents, Lenora and Warren; her stepfather, George; her sister, Sandra; and her half-brother, Sonny, Anita leaves behind her four children, two stepdaughters, seven grandchildren and their spouses, and a host of extended family, church members, friends, and neighbors who will cherish her memory.
Anita’s life was defined by her unwavering faith, her love for music, and her dedication to service. Her legacy of love and faith will continue to inspire all who knew her. May her memory be a source of comfort and hope to those she touched.
