2025 Oscar nominations snubs and surprises: Sebastian Stan and 'I'm Still Here' earn unexpected nods, Selena Gomez shut out

The 2025 Oscar nominations have been announced, sparking discussions about snubs, surprises, and the decision to proceed with the ceremony despite the devastation caused by recent wildfires in Los Angeles. After a few delays, the event is scheduled to air on March 2.

Leading the Pack
Emilia Pérez dominated with 13 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director (Jacques Audiard), Best Actress (Karla Sofía Gascón), and Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldaña). Wicked and The Brutalist followed with 10 nods each.

Snubs and Surprises
Selena Gomez was surprisingly left out for her supporting role in Emilia Pérez, despite co-stars Karla Sofía Gascón and Zoe Saldaña being recognized. Both Challengers and Queer, directed by Luca Guadagnino, were entirely shut out, while A Real Pain saw nominations for Kieran Culkin and Jesse Eisenberg but missed a Best Picture nod. Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Hard Truths) and Angelina Jolie (Maria) were notable omissions in the Best Actress category.

On the other hand, The Substance, a campy horror film, defied expectations with five nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress (Demi Moore). Nosferatu also made waves with four unexpected nods for Production Design, Cinematography, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling.

Acknowledging Wildfire Devastation
Bill Kramer, the Academy’s CEO, and Janet Yang, its president, opened the nominations ceremony by paying tribute to first responders and recognizing the challenges faced by Los Angeles during the wildfires. The event emphasized the resilience of both the city and the film industry.
