Quincy Jones dies at age 91: What he shared about his health struggles
After an impressive career spanning decades, music legend Quincy Jones has passed away at age 91.
Known for his work as a record producer, composer, arranger, songwriter, and jazz musician, Jones collaborated with iconic artists such as Michael Jackson and Frank Sinatra. Jones died on Nov. 3 at his home in Bel Air, Los Angeles, surrounded by his family.
The family shared, “Tonight, with full but broken hearts, we must share the news of our father and brother Quincy Jones’ passing. Though this is an incredible loss, we celebrate his great life and know there will never be another like him.”
Jones faced many health challenges throughout his life, including diabetes and multiple brain aneurysms. At age 41, Jones suffered two back-to-back brain aneurysms. The surgeries required for his recovery were complex, with doctors initially giving him a slim chance of survival and advising he give up playing the trumpet, as the force of blowing into the instrument could risk dislodging metal implants in his brain.
Reflecting on his survival, Jones said it felt as if "a shotgun was fired inside of my head.” Though he could no longer play the trumpet, he continued his career and went on to work on iconic projects like *Thriller* and *We Are the World*.
In 2015, Jones faced another serious health scare, going into a diabetic coma due to his Type 2 diabetes. Following his recovery, he committed to lifestyle changes, including giving up alcohol and losing weight. This decision, he said, brought new clarity to his mind, and he wished he had quit drinking sooner.
Jones also dealt with a blood clot at age 82, which caused chest pains and breathing difficulties. After recovering, he expressed his determination to maintain his health through exercise and a careful lifestyle.
Despite the health obstacles he encountered, Quincy Jones remained resilient, living life with a renewed appreciation and inspiring millions with his talent and perseverance.
