Why a woman murdered her parents and then lived with their bodies
Virginia McCullough knew exactly why the police had smashed through her front door—she had murdered her parents. As they handcuffed her, she calmly remarked, "Cheer up, at least you've caught the bad guy." For years, neighbors believed John and Lois McCullough had retired to the seaside, but in reality, their daughter had poisoned them in cold blood.
The secrets inside the McCullough home in Great Baddow, Essex, began to surface in 2019. Family members were told to stay away, and friends were led to believe the elderly couple had relocated to the Clacton coast. The truth, however, was much darker.
It took four years for the gruesome reality to come to light. John McCullough, a retired business studies lecturer, had been fatally poisoned at age 70, his body concealed in a makeshift tomb of breeze blocks and blankets. His wife, 71-year-old Lois, was found in an upstairs wardrobe, beaten with a hammer, stabbed, and also poisoned by Virginia using prescription drugs.
On Friday, Virginia McCullough, 36, was sentenced to life in prison at Chelmsford Crown Court for the brutal murders, with a minimum of 36 years to serve.
