FBI investigating apparent assassination attempt on Trump in Florida

The FBI is investigating an attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at Trump International Golf Club in Florida. Trump is unharmed, and a suspect, Ryan Wesley Routh, is in custody. Routh, a self-employed affordable-housing builder from Hawaii, had previously posted critical remarks about Trump on social media.

The incident began when a Secret Service agent spotted a rifle barrel protruding through a fence. The agent engaged the suspect, who then fled in a vehicle. Law enforcement stopped him on a nearby highway. The suspect had positioned himself 300 to 500 yards from Trump, and authorities recovered an AK-47-style rifle, a GoPro, and backpacks from the scene.

Both President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris expressed relief that Trump was safe. Law enforcement remains on high alert around the golf club, with roads still closed and a significant police presence.

Reports suggest Routh remained calm and silent during his arrest, leading investigators to believe he had prior encounters with law enforcement. Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw praised the quick response of the Secret Service, describing their actions as heroic in preventing a potentially dangerous situation.

Democratic Representative Jared Moskowitz voiced concerns over security, questioning how Routh was able to get so close to Trump with a firearm. This is the second close-call assassination attempt involving Trump in recent months, the first occurring during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

Motorists near the incident described a chaotic scene as police chased the suspect on the I-95 highway, with multiple officers and helicopters in pursuit. After the suspect was stopped, drivers reported being stuck in traffic for hours while police handled the situation.
